I can wholeheartedly vouch for the effectiveness of this process, as can the guy who nearly faceplanted at the Cheesecake Factory checking Jody out instead of paying attention to exiting the dining area safely.

Your nipples must face the world

Yes....this is the same as my "headlights facing forward"-rule. They should also be even with each other.

Great advice! :)

So he was eyeing her at the Cheesecake Factory hmmm? I don't even need to try for a good punch line. You already have one.

LOL good rules, more people need to take them to heart!!!

i feel ya on the big boob no bra fitting nothing cute available crap.

luckily, once in a while, i find a cute one that fits perfectly, and then buy a bunch of'em!!

only problem i have is that no matter what kind i buy the straps will always fall off, i think i have sloped shoulders... but oh well.

I totally understand about the sloped shoulders. I found a bra that cris-crosses low on my back that doesn't slip off my shoulders. You might try looking for one when the straps aren't so straight up-and-down in back.

So, rather than like: _|___|_
more of a __\_/__

Good luck. :)
This really was a public service. Great post!

Oh if only I could get all women to read this and follow your advice. Well done.

My favorite bra currently is the balconette bra by Cacique, which you can get at Lane Bryant (or from their website). I must have a dozen of these things. They're awesome - great uplift, nice cleavage, just enough padding and coverage. And comfortable!

I highly highly highly recommend that bra.

Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate all the helpful tips and advice. I spent some miserable hours saturday trying so hard to find the right size....And I had no idea a 36DD was that hard to find!! (Actually, I think a 34 band might fit a little better...)

I definately favorited this, so I can refer back to it. Thanks!

It's so obvious, but trying on is just so important as different bra makers use different sizing. Some don't have DDD, some use double letters all the way up, so one manufacturers F could be another's G. I agree on the strap width too, a narrow strap and it's just going to dig right into you.

And we mustn't be too cheap to replace any bras that have lost their oomph!
Fabulous...I always have a hard time finding bras that fit properly here in the UK. Also it's hard for people if they have a boob that is slightly larger than the other. No-one ever talks about that...
Almost all women have one breast larger than the other simply because the body isn't completely symmetrical. (There really isn't a great deal of real symmetry found in nature.) However, the difference in size from one breast to the other for most women is not enough to cause problems, which is why (I think) we don't hear much about that particular issue. For me, there's about a cup size difference, so like you (Princesskasren), I'd be interested in hearing more about it. The way I've always addressed the problem is to cater to the larger breast; that way I'm not faced with 'quadriboob'. It's much easier to deal with a cup that isn't quite full enough as opposed to a cup that, literally, runneth over.

I see a ton of women running around with their "girls" hanging out closer to the belly area than they should be. Not only is it not attractive (which does not matter to everyone), but it just cannot be comfortable.

Of course there is a Swedish study that is saying bras can actually damage one's breasts. I really don't think anyone over a C can afford to skip them unless they do plenty of push ups. Even then, at least wear a tank with a built in one.

I was still getting by with the tank top bras at a D, but when I am with Larva and they hit that DD mark, it just does not work anymore.

There is lots of research about how underwire bras are bad for breast health because they inhibit the proper flow of lymph and cause those mammary/lymph glands to get blocked and clogged thus sometimes leading to cancer or other breast issues. Not to mention how uncomfortable wires are. But, having large breasts is just uncomfortable, with or without a bra, and I've never been able to find a comfortable way to deal with it. I think it's just a (big breasted) fact of life.
Fortunately for me, my breasts are relatively the same size; my right one is slightly larger, but not noticeably so. If your breasts are quite different, look for bras that have removable air/water inserts. This style at Lane Bryant that have removable air pillows that sit underneath the breast and add about half a cup. I'm guessing most of the big bra names have a similar style. You could remove the pillow for the larger breast and leave it in for the smaller breast. You can also use those pillows in other bras.
I've read more research that the findings are in question because other factors were not excluded. This article at Scientific American, and, more importantly, this article at the American Cancer Society:

There are no scientifically valid studies that show wearing bras of any type causes breast cancer. The email appears to be based on the writings of a husband and wife team of medical anthropologists who link breast cancer to wearing a bra. The two anthropologists suggested this association in a book called Dressed to Kill. Their study was not conducted according to standard principles of epidemiological research and did not take into consideration other variables, including known risk factors for breast cancer.
So, don't fear the underwire - you won't get cancer from it!!

yay for the [culture is good] !

i'm closer to the IBTC team but yeah, this IS good!

Luckily for me it's only about a 1/4 cup size different but there was a tv show on over here in the UK called Embarrasing illnesses on which I had seen a woman whose breast were very different and she ended up having surgery.

Yes, I would say that an ill-fitting bra would damage the breasts, but there is nothing in the study about a correct-fitting one! And besides, the dude is delusional if he doesn't think that breasts are sexual organs. ;)

Wow, that would make me very self-conscious and I would probably opt for the surgery as well.

I'm a proponent of the microfiber "lightly padded" shaped cup bras. They aren't thick in that they don't really add any size, but the shaping does cover many blemishes and the padding helps with that embarrassing nipple poking (unless you're into that sort of thing, of course). That might work, too.

If all else fails, you could get an insert made for you. You might go to a bra boutique for ideas and options, too -- they'd probably be able to hook you up (ha ha get it? hook?)!!

From a fellow cups-runneth-over (36DD here), nicely done! Thanks for posting this.

as a 40DD I THANK you for this article.. I have ALWAYS worn a good suportive UNERWIRE Bra.. EVEN TO BED.. EVERY NIGHT since I was 9 years old. ( wore a B cup at 9) My granny told me ever since my first underwire to wear it 24/7 if I ever wanted them to look good when I was 40..
Here I am at almost 33 and after nursing 3 kids.. at a 40DD and mine look AWESOME even without a bra!! I attribute it to the care I have given them over the last 20 years...

My nipples will never again face forward. I nursed all four of my children and with each of them my breasts got bigger and my nipples migrated southwards. When my breasts were full of milk for the twins they were so huge that they were more than twice the size of the girls' heads and the biggest bra I could find at the time was a GG cup and even that wasn't really big enough.

These are very useful and very truthful. Most woman don't realize that getting the right bra is a skill and wearing the one will definitely improve our appearance.

Great post! I'm always having problems in finding a bra that is just good for me, and unfortunately the cute ones usually don't fit me.

I agree with your rules, in fact I always try bras under a tight T to check the final effect!

That is just Sweden for you honestly. There is a big movement over there right now to stop sexual attitudes towards breasts. You think Feminists over here can get ridged? Over in Sweden a bunch of angry women demanded that the penis was removed from the lion on their Army's Crest. And they did, but now the historians are up in arms because that used to be a symbol of traitor-hood.

Thank you!!

I spent years not know that you could vary the cup/band size and it's made a world of difference. I was always a DD, but found the MOST comfortable and wonderful and supportive 38C that I could ever ask for. I'd marry it if I could. I wish I had bought more than one because I wear it nearly every day. Good tips and thanks!!!
I have a picture of me tandem nursing my twins and my breasts were easily twice the size of their heads - but they were preemies... I wore a 36D pre-twins, was a 38DD while nursing, and dropped down to a 36D or 36DD depending on the bra right after I stopped.

And re: the sloped shoulders, just move the strap attachment closer to the band. I build, cover, and decorate belly dance bras for my troupe (where I have the smallest boobs!), and if I use a store-purchased bra as a base, I *always* either move the straps or replace them altogether, but they're more secure and usually give you a bit more oomph if you move the straps.
I must say, I respect your advice, although I'm only a B cup. Bra fitting is really important! I've only found one that I really love, and even then- it's not perfect. It's kind of a hippie bra- made from bamboo fibers rather than cotton (it's REALLY soft, actually), but the straps are just material, and have to elastic or ribbon. They slip off pretty easily and are hard to tighten... :(

Sweet mercy, write one of these for the small-breasted gals too!! =)

This was a lot of interesting information (and some of it useful for me too, even though I'm still excited about my recent push into B-cupdom). When I was in my teens, bra shopping was always such a nightmare--aside from finding bras to fit a gal with the tiniest of boobs, I have scoliosis which just seems to complicate bra-fitting. (I've finally found that some Victoria's Secret bra styles fit me quite nicely, hooray...) I never thought about how difficult it must be for women with larger breasts to find a comfortable fit as well (because in the eyes of 15-year-old me, all breasts were "larger breasts" and all bras were made to accommodate them, lol...).

A very entertaining and enlightening post--thanks for sharing! =)

thanks for sharing this wealth of information
I have the strap issue too-- I finally just sewed a really thin piece of ribbon to the straps so that it connected them in the back a few inches below my neck my neck (without pulling the straps together) and that has worked well for me.
yeeeeah, I have that issue-- it's very unpleasant being a DDD/D combination. On a related note, does anyone have any suggestions of good inserts to help even the girls out?
If nobody comes up with a decent insert suggestion, you could go for a custom made bra. Obviously it's more expensive but you should get a great fit.
